Terms 1 to 6 in Year 2!

🐾 Term 1 – We’re Going to the Zoo! 🦁🐵🦓🐧

Our first topic is “We’re Going to the Zoo, Zoo, Zoo!” – a fun and engaging theme that the children are going to love. We’ll be diving into some wonderful books, including There’s a Ran-Tang in My Bedroom, 24 Hours in a Zoo by Lan Cook, and Zoo by Anthony Browne. These stories will spark curiosity, inspire creativity, and help us explore the fascinating world of animals.

A highlight of the term will be our trip to Wingham Wildlife Park! The children will have the chance to see animals up close, discover more about their habitats, and enjoy an unforgettable day together. This exciting visit will link beautifully with our topic lessons, where we’ll be learning about the history of zoos and circuses and comparing them with the modern-day zoos we know today.

This term, children in Year 2 will build on their understanding of number and place value. They will begin by exploring numbers to 100, learning how to count, compare and order them. They will develop their skills in recognising the value of each digit in a two-digit number and use this knowledge to solve problems.

Throughout the term, there will be a strong emphasis on using practical resources, pictures and number lines to support their understanding, along with reasoning and problem-solving activities to help deepen their mathematical thinking.

Term 1 is a busy, exciting start to Year 2, full of hands-on learning, creativity, and new challenges.

✨ Term 2: London’s Calling! ✨

This term our topic is London’s Calling! The children will be learning all about our capital city, its famous landmarks, and some important events from its past. We’ll explore places like the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace, and Big Ben, and find out how London has changed over time.

To make learning fun, we’ll be using stories, drama, role-play, art, and map work. The children will design their own landmarks, write as though they are London tour guides, and discover what life was like in the city during events such as the Great Fire of London. We’ll also link this to our reading and writing, with chances to create diaries, stories, and descriptions inspired by London.

In maths, we follow the White Rose programme, which helps children build their confidence step by step. This term we’ll be focusing on addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, with plenty of chances to use practical resources and pictures to help the children understand their work.

You can support at home by practising number bonds to 10 and 20, counting in 2s, 5s, and 10s, and using everyday situations for maths—like sharing out food, doubling numbers, or spotting shapes around you. White Rose also has free resources and a “1-minute maths” app which are great for short, fun practice at home.

It’s going to be another a busy and exciting term, full of creativity and discovery, and we can’t wait to see the children bring London to life in our classroom!

🌟 Term 3: Inspiring Individuals 🌟

Get ready for an exciting and inspiring term in Year 2! This term, our topic is all about real-life heroes who made a big difference in the world. Through brilliant books like Hoorah for Mary Seacole and Little People, Big Dreams – Florence Nightingale, children will discover what makes someone truly inspirational and how everyday people can change the world.

One of the highlights this term will be our “Dress as Your Favourite Hero” Day, where children can come dressed as someone who inspires them – whether that’s a historical figure, a real-life role model, or even a superhero at home! It’s a fantastic way to celebrate bravery, kindness, and creativity.

In Maths, we’ll be diving into money, multiplication, and measurement through fun, practical activities using the White Rose scheme. You can help at home by practising coins, times tables, and measuring everyday objects together.

It’s going to be a term full of curiosity, creativity, and courageous characters – we can’t wait to get started!

🌾🥕Term 5- From Field to Fork 🍎🥖

This term, Year 2 children will dive into the exciting world of food! They’ll explore how fruits, vegetables, and grains grow, travel, and end up on our plates. Through hands-on experiments, creative activities, and taste tests, your child will become a little food detective, discovering the journey from farm to fork in a fun, interactive way.

In Maths, your child will continue building confidence with multiplication, division, fractions, and measurements, seeing how numbers connect to real life. You can help at home by spotting fractions in snacks, measuring ingredients for recipes, or practicing simple times tables in everyday moments. It’s going to be a term full of discovery, learning, and tasty adventures!

🌊🐸 Term 5- Go With the Flow 🌿🐟

In Term 5, Year 2 will be plunging into the fascinating world of rivers, streams, and ponds with our exciting topic “Go With the Flow”! Children will explore the journey of water in nature, discover the plants and animals that live in and around rivers, and learn how waterways shape our environment. Our highlight will be an unforgettable pond-dipping adventure at Dartford Park, where children will get hands-on experience investigating pond life, linking their outdoor discoveries directly to their classroom learning about habitats, ecosystems, and the water cycle.

In Maths, we will continue following White Rose (Summer, Weeks 1–6), focusing on practical, everyday skills. Children will explore money by recognising coins and notes, making amounts, and solving simple problems. They will deepen their understanding of time, learning to read clocks, sequence events, and measure durations in hours and minutes. They will also collect, present, and interpret data through simple charts and graphs, while investigating the properties of shapes and describing position, direction, and movement.

At home, you can help by encouraging your child to tell the time, use money in everyday situations, or gather simple data (like favourite fruits or colours) to create charts together. This term promises hands-on learning, outdoor adventures, and practical ways to see Maths in action!

🌞🏖️ Term 6- I Do Like to Be Beside the Seaside 🌊🍦

In our final term, Year 2 will be diving into the wonders of the seaside with our topic “I Do Like to Be Beside the Seaside”! Children will explore coastal environments, discover the animals, plants, and habitats that thrive by the shore, and learn about the history and culture of seaside towns. A highlight of the term will be our visit to Minnis Bay, where children will experience the beach firsthand—collecting shells, observing rock pools, and linking these outdoor adventures directly to their classroom learning about the seaside and its ecosystems.

In Maths, children will consolidate and extend their learning across a range of topics. They will solve practical problems involving money, explore measurement in real-life contexts, and deepen their understanding of fractions and times. They will also investigate properties of shapes, position, direction, and movement, while using data to compare, sort, and interpret information. This final term gives children the opportunity to see how maths connects to the world around them in practical and exciting ways.

Term 6 is also full of exciting events to celebrate the year! Children will take part in Sports Day, enjoy outdoor challenges, and demonstrate their teamwork and perseverance. Transition Day will help them get ready for the next stage of their learning, meeting their new teachers and exploring their future classrooms. It’s a term of adventure, fun, and reflection—ending the year with unforgettable memories both in the classroom and beyond!
