Welcome to Year 5

We would like to welcome you to our Year 5 page.  Our aim is to highlight the different topics covered across the year and to specify what the children will be learning in each term.  We hope you find this information useful.  If you have any additional questions, please speak to a member of the Year 5 team or message us on dojo.

Year 5 in Terms

Term 1- Incredible India

This term, we shall be using our knowledge and skills to explore how people live in other areas of the world through our topic ‘Incredible India‘.

Our focus book: ‘Asha and the Spirit Bird’ tells the story of a young girl sets off on an adventure to find her father and save their home.

In our Geography lessons we will locate India on a world map and draw a detailed map to show its main physical features.

We will look at the expansion of the British Empire and its impact on India as part of our history focus.

Art lessons will focus on drawing a landscape as well as designing henna and Rangoli  patterns as part of our art day.

 

Term 2 - Local legends

This term, we shall be exploring and engaging with our topic ‘Local Legends‘.

We will look at people who are  famous  and discover why they are important people to remember from our local area.

Our reading and writing will be linked, ‘A Christmas Carol‘ by Charles Dickens.

We will look at Charles Dicken’s biography. Did you know that he moved to London as a child: His family relocated to the Camden Town area of London in 1822 when he was 10 years old.

Term 3-Out of this World

We shall be exploring our topic ‘Out of this World‘.

In Science, we will study the planets in our solar system as well as take an in-depth look at space exploration.

Our computing focus centres around the Mars Rover and how it can be controlled to collect data that can be send back to Earth.

We will design, make and launch our own rockets in design technology lessons!

Our class reader is, ‘Cosmic‘ by Frank Cottrell Boyce. The story follows Liam Digby, an unusually tall twelve-year old who is often mistaken for an adult. This leads him to compete against adults for a chance to go into space.

Term 4- Into the Amazon

Our topic for this term is ‘Into the Amazon‘.

Come on a journey with us into the Amazon rainforest and learn about the physical geography of the area, the plants and animals that can be found there as well as investigating what can be done to help save this amazing ecosystem.

We will read, ‘World Burn Down’ by Steve Cole. This is a fast-paced adventure that raises awareness of the environmental devastation caused by the destruction of the Amazon rainforest.

 

Term 5- Horrible Henry

Across this term, we shall be exploring and engaging with our topic ‘Horrible Henry’.

Travel back in time to ‘The Tudors’ to find out what was it really like to live back then. Discover how many wives Henry VIII had and what really happened to them.

‘Honest and Lies’ by Eloise Williams is an engaging story that the children will enjoy reading. A tale of intrigue, scheming and plots set in the spellbinding world of the Elizabethan court.

Term 6- Who Let the Gods Out?

Across this term, we shall be exploring and engaging with our topic ‘Who Let the Gods Out?’.

We will be learning about life in Ancient Greece, What was it like to live as a citizen or as a Spartan soldier? Find out about mythical creatures, gods and stories of wonder.
