How Your Child Will be Learning

The EYFS Framework explains how and what your child will be learning to support their healthy development. Your child will be learning skills, acquiring new knowledge and demonstrating their understanding through 7 areas of learning and development.

Children should mostly develop the 3 prime areas first. These are:

  • Communication and language
  • Physical development
  • Personal, social and emotional development.

These prime areas are those most essential for your child’s healthy development and future learning.

As children grow, the prime areas will help them to develop skills in 4 specific areas. These are:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the world
  • Expressive arts and design

These 7 areas are used to plan your child’s learning and activities. The professionals teaching and supporting your child will make sure that the activities are suited to your child’s unique needs.

This is a little bit like a curriculum in primary and secondary schools, but it’s suitable for very young children, and it’s designed to be really flexible so that staff can follow your child’s unique needs and interests.

Children in the EYFS learn by playing and exploring, being active, and through creative and critical thinking which takes place both indoors and outside.

EYFS in Terms

Term 1

During Term 1, the children will experience a gradual transition into Reception. Children will continue to have opportunities to access play-based learning experiences  before being introduced to Read, Write, Inc (Phonics) and a short input session for Maths. We will be focusing on who we are as a person, what our likes and dislikes are, our family and friends, how we are feeling and what makes us US!

We will be focusing on the well-being of the children making sure they are feeling happy, safe and valued within their environment, as well as helping the children to adjust to the everyday routine of school.

Term 2

In this term, we continue to develop the children’s learning in phonics, mathematics and writing.

This term is also an exciting term as there are many wonderful festivals, celebrations and special dates for the children to learn from. We endeavour to immerse the children in various learning opportunities where they can learn more about themselves, their families, their peers, the wider community and the place in which they live. Some key celebrations and dates that we will plan experiences for are: Diwali, Black History Month, Guy Fawkes night, Remembrance Day and Christmas.

Term 3

In Term 3 we offer exciting and enriching learning experience that engage children in a variety of themes, including traditional tales, people who help us, and Lunar New Year. Through storytelling, children explore the magic of classic fairy tales, developing their imagination, language skills, and understanding of morals and values. They also learn about the important roles of people who help us in our community—such as doctors, firefighters, and teachers—fostering a sense of respect and gratitude. Additionally, we celebrate the vibrant traditions of Lunar New Year, introducing children to the rich cultural customs, stories, and festivities that make this celebration so special. By immersing children in these diverse topics, we nurture their curiosity, empathy, and cultural awareness, laying the foundation for lifelong learning.

Term 4

In Term 4, we explore a wide range of exciting and meaningful themes to inspire young learners. We will take a closer look at  Rainforests, children embark on an adventure through the jungle, learning about diverse animals, plants, and the importance of protecting our planet. Healthy Eating encourages children to make nutritious food choices, fostering positive habits for a lifetime of wellness. On World Book Day, we celebrate the joy of reading, where children dress up as their favourite characters and immerse themselves in the wonderful world of books. We also honour Mother’s Day, creating thoughtful crafts and activities that show appreciation for the special women in our lives. During Ramadan, children explore the significance of fasting, reflection, and charity, gaining understanding of this important religious observance. Red Nose Day brings laughter and fun, while raising awareness for important causes, teaching children the value of kindness and giving. As Spring arrives, we embrace the season of renewal, discovering new life in nature and celebrating the changes around us. Finally, our Easter activities bring the joy of springtime festivities with egg hunts, crafts, and stories that reflect themes of rebirth and hope. These rich and diverse topics help to broaden children’s understanding of the world while encouraging creativity, compassion, and curiosity.

Term 5

In Term 5 we will explore the theme of the farm and learn about the life cycle of plants. The children will discover how seeds grow into plants, what they need to be healthy, and why farms are so important. Together we will plant our own seeds, learning how to care for them by giving them water, soil, and sunlight. The children will watch the changes each day and talk about what might happen next. Children will understand growth, change, and where our food comes from.

To support and extend our learning, the children will visit a farm for our year group trip!

Term 6

In our final term together,  we will host our own Carnival, taking part in music, dancing and lots of colourful fun. We will take part in Sports Day where the  children can develop great teamwork and take part in different races and activities. We will also mark Father’s Day with crafts and special messages to say thank you to our dads and important male role models. As we prepare for Transition, the children will visit their new classrooms and meet their new teachers, helping them to feel confident and excited about the next step in their learning journey at Fleetdown.
